Discourage human and household waste to the open to river through photovoice project
This training aimed at creating awareness among participants on how they can be able to prevent some of the disease brought about by living in dirty places and help circulate this information to the community at large.
During the training, participants were trained on Community Led Total Sanitation (C.L.T.S) facilitated by the community health assistant. The training participants included landlords, natural and religious leaders, community health volunteers, youth leaders and were all forty in number. During the training, a committee of 8 people was selected and included the chairperson, the vice chairperson, the secretary, the vice secretary and four members. This committee was to identify places where mapping was to be done on places that have toilets, playing grounds, garbage disposal areas, food vendors and water points to help know whether these places are safe from diseases such as diarrhea.
One of the main reasons for the training was to help educate participants on ways in which they can help prevent diseases such as diarrhea which are a result of poor sanitation.
Some of the key issues addressed during the training include;
  • When looking for a rental home make sure that there’s a toilet available.
  • Toilets should be left clean at all times and after using the toilet one should wash their hands.
  • All foods should be washed with clean water and serve food when it’s all warm.
  • Landlords should make sure that there’s a garbage disposal point and educate tenants on proper usage of toilets.
  • One should ensure that they live in a clean place, wear clean clothes, open windows as regularly as possible to ensure free flow of air.
  • To help prevent spreading of this diseases make sure that all patients are admitted to the hospital.
  • Water storage tanks should be treated.
Training participants on photo voice at Lunga Lunga Youth Centre
The training majorly focused on photovoice which is participatory photography where a photo is used to send a particular message. The participants were divided into 3 groups and went to the ground to take some photos using their phones on different topics which included water, garbage disposal areas and defecation. This activity took approximately 30 minutes and selected group members went on to do their presentation in front of the participants. The photo voice has three goals which include;
  1. Empowering participants to record their community needs and strengths.
  2. Promoting critical discussions among participants about the photos.
  3. Creating a platform for participants to engage with policy makers /influencers/stakeholders to spark change.
It is however very important to note that before taking any photo for the purpose of photo voice one must seek consent of individuals in the picture which will need a consent form and also a verbal consent from those in the picture as a lesson learnt during the process
Six steps have to be followed when conducting a photo voice;
  1. Needs assessment-what do you want the picture to depict.
  2. Take photos
  3. Group discussion-participants discuss why they took the picture and the need of the photo and what would you like to change about what’s depicted in the picture.
  4. Caption writing-must be included.
  5. Data analysis
  6. Photo exhibition-presentation of the photo.
Photo voice can be used to address problems that a community faces, how the problems being depicted in the photo relate to you, why this kind of problems exist in your community and what can be done about it. From the demonstrations done, this was seen to be one of the most effective and efficient way of passing information and engaging the community in an interactive way, and making a harmful situation look attractive.
Some of the recommendations given by the participants included.
  • Landlords should build toilets for their tenants and also provide garbage disposal points.
  • Food vendors should ensure all foods are washed thoroughly.
  • Those who provide water to the community should ensure that water is treated.
  • Ensure toilets are clean at all times.
  • Ensure that all rooms are well ventilated.
  • Garbage disposal points should be in a safe area not near rivers or households.
  • If someone gets sick you should refer them to a hospital.
This activity followed world youth day that was celebrated by the participants involving community members and different development partners in community clean up.
