Parental Counseling

The ALot Change project also offers a component for the parents of the boys and girls and establishes whether parental sensitization and counselling will increase the level of support that parents and community leaders provide towards the education of their children. This will be assessed after the last year of the project when boys and girls, who started in Class six, will have undertaken their Kenya Certificate of Primary Examination (KCPE) at the end of Class eight. On 30th June, 2018 happens to be one of the many days when a counselling sessions was held. U-Tena exposes over 200 parents from Viwandani-Mukuru Slums on parenting talks and counseling at least four times a year. The session had a main objective of getting to know the impact the A-LOT Change project has to the parents as well as their children.

They had the following to say:
 There has been noted to be positive change in the participants’ behavior.
 The parents admitted that they show respect when they talk to them.
 Parent-Child communication too has improved
 Parents’ interaction among themselves has improved.
 They learn from each other thanks to the counselling session
 The performance of the participants in school has also improved.

In the other sessions, the counselors choose topics guided by manuals provided by APHRC. The parents have a group counselling where they discuss on the topic. This way they get to exchange ideas and are free with each other. Hence for every emerging issues the parents present help come up with a solution with the guidance of the counselor.
