Mtaani Inintiative Four_Livelihoods Project
U-Tena under the Mtaani initiative is working towards achieving three main outcomes. Under the outcomes, several successes were achieved through different intervention activities as outlined below;
1. Youths empowered and sustainably earn from their revived/ sustained income-generating activities.
In 2021/2022 U-Tena managed to reach 13 youths groups. The number of groups reached so far by the project is more than 20 groups. The following are some of the youth groups supported under Mtaani Initiative
2. Sinai Paradise Sinai paradise was started in 2019 by a group of young footballers. They started with a merry-go-round of 30ksh every week. They further added to 50ksh and opt to have a business running.
With the eruption of covid -19, the football activities were supported thus opting to maximize on poultry business.
With a sub-grant from U-Tena, the group managed to increase the chickens.
3.Mukuru Oasis of hope.
Through the support from Mtaani Initiative, they were able to buy two 10,000 liters’ tanks to expand their water vending and added 4 taps. The project enabled them to expand their business and reach more households with water.
4. G-Thamini The group is a community-based organization that runs various activities from mentorship, and art and ruining a community library. The sub granting funds helped the group to purchase the machine that helps to run the printing of T-shirts, branding e.g. cups. The children participating in art have been supported through the availing of materials and exhibitions to showcase their products.
5. Clarity Cleaning Services.
CCS is based in Mathare. It started operating in 2009 with 20 cleaners. Their core business is cleaning services mostly toilets in residential places, commercial buildings, public toilets, and schools.
The group had been working with AC Johnson from 2009 t0 2015 providing imported products distinguishing their services thus setting their bar above others. The grant helped CCS to purchase washing equipment including detergents and expanded their customer base. The grant helped them to secure two major contracts _Hospitals and Godowns. U – Tena helped them to address group dynamics including reporting on their progress.
6. Amazon prime self-help group.
The group started as a merry–go–round Chama. With the saving they accumulated, they were in a position to get a loan thus they had to register the group. The group is currently running a hotel business that received a great boost from Mtaani initiative project.
7. Kware Mukuru Vision Sisters.
The group started as a table –banking in the last 5 years. As a way of growth, the group started chicken rearing to increase their income. the business has been running for 2years. the goal is to add more chicken for eggs as they look forward to their long-term objective of building better housing for each member of the group. Mtaani initiative supported this group to increase their stock.
8. Embakwa
The grant helped the group to expand their internet business as well as purchased a printer. They have witnessed increased income through sales, bulk printing as well as internet distribution.
9. Kware New Vision 2
The grant helped the group to purchase a welding machine and a power drill. The funds enabled the group to also employ three interns due to increased production hence increased income. The interns are paid kshs 15,000 per month.
10.Mukuru Huduma Kitchen
The group is based in Mukuru kwa Njenga. The group’s current activities include merry-go-round and table banking. Their current project is in food merchandise where they major in fish distribution and selling.
11. Aspire to Inspire-ATIS
ATIS is a group of 12 members working in Kwa Njenga slums. Their main activity was sanitation selling water. The projects were destroyed during the Mukuru demolition. They are currently running a shop.
Through the support from Mtaani initiative the group has been able to increase their volumes resulting in increased income. They are able to reach new market areas since they have the ability to purchase more from the farmers and increased demand for eggs. They have been able to employ one person to coordinate sales and storage.
12. Zindua jamii.
The group work in making shoes at a subsidized price that is affordable to the community. Managed to repair sewing machine and stocked the shop. U-Tena supported the proprietor with business skills, customer relations and soft skills such as self-drive and commitment to the course.
13. Inuka Project.
U-Tena Youth Organization initiated an income-generating activity of selling eggs. The organization engaged ten youths whereby they sent Kshs 150 on daily basis with one-off day per week. It’s an opportunity for youths to enhance their income with support of the provision of materials and pieces of equipment by U-Tena.
