2019 World Youth Day Celebrations
On the 10th August, U-Tena in partnership with other partners organized for a community clean up as a way of celebrating world youth day. This acted as a community action activity after the awareness. It was the culmination of the sanitation project and everyone who was trained on photo voice participated in the cleanup. The cleanup was also organized with the Viwandani wad admiration and brought together other partners like Access Afya, Red cross and Jhpiego. During the activity, U-Tena created awareness on importance of proper hygiene and the responsibility the community has to make the environment clean and also mobilized people for NCD screening services offered by Access afya and Red Cross
  • The Viwandani community appreciated the new strategy U-Tena used to pass information to the community through the non- lecture method and involving the right audience
  • Targeting the young people, adolescents and the children to pass the sanitation information to the adults has proven to work better than using the adults to pass the information to the young generation
  • Every one within Viwandani admits that issues hygiene and good sanitation is a personal responsibility, however some feel that the landlords should take full responsibility
To achieve a community free from open defecation and also do away with flying toilets, all stakeholders need to unite and identify the gaps. However, it was noted that for anything to work well, the partners doing awareness must be fully involved because that is the milestone to behavior change.
