Six school outreaches were also conducted in schools the school health coordinator had helped U-Tena to identify within Viwandani. These schools were (St. Elizabeth Primary School, Little bells Primary School, Cana Kings Primary School, Baptist Primary School, PEFA primary and Dynamic community school). This awareness activities were done from 3:10 pm as agreed with the school management. U-Tena performed different skits on hygiene focusing on proper use of toilets and hand washing then facilitation was also done. The teachers were also not left out of this and after every activity, 10 pupils were selected to be the champions and follow up on what they had learnt through the activity, and the health club patron also made a commitment to follow up. It was however noted that;
- The pupils demonstrated some understanding in handwashing mostly those in the lower primary;
- It was also observed that the pupils had some information on the consequences of poor hygiene but some felt that it is something they cannot control because they live in the slum. Though personal hygiene is a personal responsibility, there are those who felt that the schools need to have hygiene policies and employ staffs who will be cleaning the toilets rather than the pupils;
- The pupils also expressed that the issue of open defecation is a challenge that might last a bit longer because there are limited toilets within Viwandani and their perception is that, those toilets should be used by grown up;
- The participants could identify with the skits performed by U-Tena and agreed that those were real scenarios and the CLTS facilitators would help come up with way forward and also give facts to the participants;
- Some recommended that if the school toilets can always remain open even during the night and access allowed, that can partly solve the problem of open defecation which the teachers said its impossible;
- By end of every session conducted by U-Tena, all the participants could demonstrate knowledge of handwashing and any other issues addressed relating to sanitation
