Training of football captains, youth leaders and performing artists by The Ministry of Health Kenya officials
Through the support of AstraZeneca’s young health program, U-Tena conducted a four days training held at the Lunga Lunga youth friendly space from the 10th to 13th July, 2019. This training was organized in collaboration with the Makadara and Embakasi East sub counties which covers the informal settlement of Mukuru (Njenga, Ruben and Viwandani). Captains to 10 identified football clubs, 15 performing artists, 10 youth mobilizers and five youth community health volunteers were trained. The training facilitators came from both Makadara and Embakasi East sub counties, coordinated by the sub county NCD coordinators within the Ministry of Health in Kenya. The training mostly focused on risk factors and need to do awareness on NCD where the following were key topics discussed
  • Causes of Non communicable diseases
  • Risk factors (targeting specific target groups)
  • Reasons there is a high rise of NCD in Kenya
  • Types of NCD
  • Prevention of specific NCD
  • Symptoms to specific NCD
During a plenary session, some of the myths about NCD were
  • Witchcraft
  • Sugar in tea
  • Sugar daddy
  • Curse
  • It’s for the aged
  • It’s for the rich
NB: It was noted that the burden of NCD inflicts serious damage to human development both socially and physic-all
